Quid Pro Quo Religion

It's come to this: a priest in South Carolina is punishing parishioners by telling them "that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion."

I don't think I've ever heard of this sort of thing happening in the US. Sure, I recall John Kerry himself being warned by his priest that he should refrain from communion, but that's a specific individual. This is a case of widespread attack.

Hey, in a way, I don't lament it. It's what I expect from the church and I can only hope that the effect it has will be to drive more away from its hold. That's change I can believe in!

Ah, the culture war. We southerners do it best. I got in trouble at work for putting "Yes We Can!" beside my name on the sign-in white board, as being insensitive. I hate that I missed the team meeting where that came up. Because I would have pointed out that the sensitivity leaders had no problem with all the forwarded emails accusing Obama of being the Muslim antichrist.

The whole business is especially ironic in light of the fact that the "red letter" part of the Bible talks mainly about social justice, not so much about abortion and gay rights.

Sad times in the Catholic church, and yes, it took a hard right turn when JPII purged the bishops in the 1980's. Sad to see them push themselves out to the fringe that way.

I was gratified and felt vindicated when I saw several of my church members at the Obama office. Interesting times. Perhaps FoxNews can merge with the 700 Club and be done with it.
